SANTA VERONICA AND ITS BAY
Santa Verónica has 2 big beaches where the wind blows side-on shore. The Eastern beach is relatively wide and has some good areas for kite take-off and landing while the Western beach is a lot narrower making take-off and landing a bit more complicated. When the wind is strong big and powerful waves, that are also very close to one another, will form a barrier near the coast. Lighter winds will dissipate these waves, making entering the water easier and less risky. These beaches offer multiple entering and exit points (from the water), making sailing to and from Salinas del Rey possible.
Styles: Strapless, Big Air, Freeride
Levels: Confirmed for strong winds, independent for lighter winds.
Distance from Santa Verónica: 0 km
SALINAS DEL REY
Salinas del Rey is the most popular and frequented spot in the region, and it gained even more popularity recently by hosting a GKA Freestyle circuit in the years 2022 and 2023. Salinas del Rey is formed by a bay where waves break from the northern end and has a flatwater area in the center. The wind is side-offshore at the water entry point but side onshore on the other side of the bay. The water near the beach is shallow for about 10 meters. The location’s topology and wind direction make it a fairly safe spot; however, one must have good mastery of kitesurfing techniques because, despite appearances, it can pose its challenges, especially due to the current that forms at the beach’s edge and the areas with different winds.
Styles: Strapless, Big Air, Wingfoil.
Level: Independent
Distance from Santa Verónica: ~1 km
PUERTO VELERO
Puerto Velero is formed by a sandbank, with one side open to the Caribbean Sea where waves are created by the offshore swell; and on the other side, a bay sheltered from the waves and therefore flat. The wind on the seaside is side-onshore and relatively steady, while on the bay side, it is side-offshore and affected by the nearby hills. However, there is relatively shallow water inside the bay, making it a suitable spot for freestyle, kitefoil, or wingfoil; whereas the waves on the seaside can be large, powerful, and messy, which can entertain Strapless or Big Air enthusiasts.
Boca Tocino, also known as Punta Astillero, is located approximately 20 km south of Santa Veronica and is relatively unknown. It’s a fishing village with a large wild beach, where the wind blows side-onshore quite regularly, and consistently, forming interesting waves.
Styles: Strapless, Big Air, Downwind.
Level: Confirmed
Distance from Santa Verónica: ~20 km
OUR TEACHING SPOT
Our teaching spot is a place very close to Santa Veronica that is not frequented by many people. The beach is relatively spacious and remains almost deserted during the week. It has a large area of flat water and the wind is side-onshore. Once in the water, there are two wind zones: a fairly strong side-onshore wind offshore and a lighter side-shore wind along the beach. The conditions of this place and its low influx make it an ideal spot for giving lessons and for beginners, but it is also a perfect spot for practicing Freeride, Freestyle, Kitefoil, and Wingfoil. However, the wind at this spot behaves differently from other places, so more experienced kitesurfers prefer to go to other spots.
